Testimony of a Seed

I laid there in the blackened soil,
My purpose not yet known.
I only heard the soft whistle of the wind,
Never able to feel its breath.
Being a minuscule part of this world,
I was blind to its wonders.
Lifeless and lonely, I waited to rot.

Heaven saw my unquenched soul
And opened its loving arms.
I looked to the over-looming clouds above
And saw you descend upon me.
Your sweet water refreshed my dried up shell,
Seeping into me to give me life.
You knew my purpose and gave me my chance.

A new day and a new light shone forth,
Transforming me to a bud of green.
You daily lavished your drink on me,
And I began to grow.
I became a living stem, tall and strong,
My roots firmly grounded.
Filled with your juice of life, I knew more was to come.

As the sun rose and set,
New wonders unfolded from my bosom.
My colors beautiful, my fragrance sweet,
My full potential was unveiled.
Yet lovely as I was,
What good was my appeal for myself alone?
Surely to be of no use is not my end.

I began to share my gifts with others,
Giving life to hungry souls.
Through a taste of me, there was a taste of you.
No longer pretty, no longer full of bloom,
I was enjoyed more than ever.
It was then I realized my purpose.
In order to live, I had to die.
